Billy Elliot
7th-9th April 2015
" I would like students to take away from the show the feeling that they can be who they want to be. You shouldn’t
listen to negative things people say if you are working hard towards achieving something – good for you! Chase your
dreams and don’t let anybody stop you." Scott Mckenzie ( 'Billy' in 2010/11-West End)
The theatre workshop will allow participants to work on selected scenes from Billy Elliot and explore some of the story’s core themes – history, citizenship and individuality. Through drama, participants will work on the Newcastle accent and delivery, along with exploring the theatricality of presenting the juxtaposition of the miners struggle and the beauty of ballet.
Dance will link to the themes of the story and will include mixed style choreography to reflect the era of the musical as well as using stimulus work to highlight the emotional elements. The creative process will also include singing and learning songs made famous in the West End production. Choral singing will be taught in which participants will learn vocal numbers from the musical along with opportunities for solos in the end of workshop showcase.
